Margarita Pirinen to speak on the next generation of medical AI at the BRICS forum

Speaking on 6 October

On 6 October 2026, BIOS founder Margarita Pirinen will speak at the second International Financial, Investment and Media Forum of BRICS Countries in Moscow. Her talk will be part of Section 3, “Digital Technologies and Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Business”.

The talk is titled “The Next Generation of Medical AI: Technological Sovereignty of BRICS Countries and the Future of the Bioeconomy”. Margarita Pirinen will examine how dynamic modelling of human health could shape medical technologies, scientific research and business development.

The programme lists the section as a joint session with the Commission for Scientific, Technological and Innovation Development (“Intellectual Sovereignty”) of the United Russia party’s federal project “Choose Your Own”. Participants can select this section in the organisers’ registration form, which is in Russian.

From medical records to a model of health over time

The talk asks how observations collected at different points in a person’s life can be connected. Laboratory results, symptoms, prescriptions and everyday measurements capture different aspects of health. A dynamic model needs to account for their sequence, the circumstances in which they were recorded and changes following interventions.

This poses a more demanding task than processing a single document or answering an isolated question. The model needs to retain a person’s history, relate new information to existing observations and account for incomplete data. This would provide a basis for studying changes in health, making testable predictions and identifying the additional observations needed to refine them.

The central proposition is that modelling human health over time could become a foundation for the next generation of medical technologies. Work on the scientific, technological and economic conditions for that transition needs to begin now.

Technology and the research agenda

Against the background of AI development in Russia and internationally, the talk will examine the conditions needed to build these systems:

• an independent research agenda, from defining problems to choosing methods and quality criteria;
• medical data and knowledge infrastructure that supports longitudinal observations and traceable sources;
• evaluation on specific tasks, including accuracy, limitations and the settings in which results are applicable;
• sustainable business models that connect research with implementation and ongoing product support.

BIOS will be presented as an example of this approach in development. The talk will distinguish between the system’s existing capabilities, its longer-term architecture and research questions that still need to be tested.

Implications for the bioeconomy and BRICS cooperation

Medical AI development involves research teams, clinics, technology companies and investors. The talk will consider their relationship through the bioeconomy: how knowledge of human health can inform technologies and products, what resources this requires and how development can be sustained over the long term.

A separate part of the presentation will address technological sovereignty and opportunities for cooperation among BRICS countries. Topics include developing an independent research agenda, building data and knowledge infrastructure, evaluating technologies and creating the conditions for collaborative research to lead to sustainable business projects.
